Today, we’re going to discuss 9 relaxation meditations practiced around the world, and we hope you’ll join the conversation.
What Is Meditation?
If you follow our Vibravision Foundation, you may have read our March 5, 2019 post about five meditation types and their benefits. There, we provided a definition from Yoga International that defines the practice well.
“[Meditation is] a precise technique for resting the mind and attaining a state of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking state…Meditation is…a science, which means that the process of meditation follows a particular order, has definite principles, and produces results that can be verified. In meditation, the mind is clear, relaxed, and inwardly focused. When you meditate, you are fully awake and alert, but your mind is not focused on the external world or on the events taking place around you. Meditation requires an inner state that is still and one-pointed so that the mind becomes silent. When the mind is silent and no longer distracts you, meditation deepens.”

- Metta Meditation: This Indian form of meditation is of Buddhist origin and focuses on expressing love and kindness – Metta in the Pali language – toward yourself and others. It is practiced in a seated position and involves repeating words or phrases that evoke a “boundless warm-hearted feeling.”
- Mindfulness Meditation: Mindfulness meditation is similarly rooted in Buddhism, specifically Vipassana or insight meditation. It has also been influenced by Vietnamese Zen Buddhism. Mindfulness meditation is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and, as Live & Dare explains, the practice involves “intentionally focusing on the present moment, accepting and non-judgmentally paying attention to the sensations, thoughts, and emotions that arise.”
- Mindful Breathing (Breath awareness): In the Pali language, mindful breathing is called samatha. Samatha practice is incorporated within many Buddhist traditions and involves calming the mind to increase concentration.
- Kundalini Yoga: Kundalini yoga is a complex form of “energy awakening” that is deeply influenced by Hinduism and must be practiced under the guidance of a qualified yogi. Its goal is to awaken dormant energy centers in the body to achieve psychic development and enlightenment.
- Zen: Zen, or Zazen, is Japanese in origin and is one of the most widely practiced Buddhist meditation techniques in existence. It involves sitting on a mat or a chair, straightening the back, and focusing on the movement of breath, often to a count.
- Transcendental: Transcendental meditation is an Indian technique, first introduced in the 1950s. It is practiced widely worldwide and involves repeating specific mantras, which are often the Tantric names of Hindu deities.
- Guided: Guided meditation is “a modern phenomenon” that involves focusing with the help of a guide on overcoming a specific challenge or achieving a specific desire. Guided meditations are often shared via recordings that consumers can listen to with headphones while they are either seated in a comfortable position or laying down. They often involve imagery that “makes use of the imagination and visualization powers of the brain” for the purposes of relaxation and/or healing.
- Binaural Beats: Binaural beats are sound frequencies that were originally discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, a Polish physicist, and meteorologist. Through his research. Dove learned that when these rhythms are transmitted through stereo headphones -with a different beat playing in each ear – they can help the brain achieve a meditative state. Binaural beats are useful for relaxation, sleep, and focus.
- Affirmations: Affirmations are usually incorporated within the practice of guided imagery and involve the repetition of a positive or inspirational phrase tied to a specific desire or goal. “I believe in myself,” “I have confidence in what I do,” and “life is good,” are examples of common affirmations.
