As the June wedding season approaches, love is in the air! After all, isn’t “love” a universal language? Maybe! But it’s not the only one. ‘Turns out, meditation is also wide-reaching. Today, we’re going to discuss 9 relaxation meditations practiced around the world, and we hope you’ll join the conversation.

Wealth Of Health Meditation

What Is Meditation?

If you follow our Vibravision Foundation, you may have read our March 5, 2019 post about five meditation types and their benefits. There, we provided a definition from Yoga International that defines the practice well.

“[Meditation is] a precise technique for resting the mind and attaining a state of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking state…Meditation is…a science, which means that the process of meditation follows a particular order, has definite principles, and produces results that can be verified. In meditation, the mind is clear, relaxed, and inwardly focused. When you meditate, you are fully awake and alert, but your mind is not focused on the external world or on the events taking place around you. Meditation requires an inner state that is still and one-pointed so that the mind becomes silent. When the mind is silent and no longer distracts you, meditation deepens.”

At MP USA, our Wealth of Health and Vibravision programs can be classified as forms of meditation because they specialize in using meditation to improve both personal health and situational awareness. Our Wealth of Health program is beneficial on a holistic level because it creates an environment for active meditation, which can help you unlock the secrets to a longer, healthier life. If you want to drill down further, our Vibravision program allows you to sharpen your senses so keenly that you can “see” without using your eyes. In the United States, both opportunities are available only through MP USA.

What Options Are Available?

Before we delve deeper, we’d like to remind you of six ways meditation will improve your life. These include:

  • Stress Relief
  • Improved Focus
  • Making Money
  • Improved Immune System
  • Improved Sleep
  • Problem Solving

What’s even better is that there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to acquiring these benefits. If you’d like to explore some options, Live & Dare gives you 23. We’ve narrowed them down to nine.

  1. Metta Meditation: This Indian form of meditation is of Buddhist origin and focuses on expressing love and kindness – Metta in the Pali language – toward yourself and others. It is practiced in a seated position and involves repeating words or phrases that evoke a “boundless warm-hearted feeling.”
  2. Mindfulness Meditation: Mindfulness meditation is similarly rooted in Buddhism, specifically Vipassana or insight meditation. It has also been influenced by Vietnamese Zen Buddhism. Mindfulness meditation is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and, as Live & Dare explains,  the practice involves “intentionally focusing on the present moment, accepting and non-judgmentally paying attention to the sensations, thoughts, and emotions that arise.”
  3. Mindful Breathing (Breath awareness): In the Pali language, mindful breathing is called samatha. Samatha practice is incorporated within many Buddhist traditions and involves calming the mind to increase concentration.
  4. Kundalini Yoga: Kundalini yoga is a complex form of “energy awakening” that is deeply influenced by Hinduism and must be practiced under the guidance of a qualified yogi. Its goal is to awaken dormant energy centers in the body to achieve psychic development and enlightenment.
  5. Zen: Zen, or Zazen, is Japanese in origin and is one of the most widely practiced Buddhist meditation techniques in existence. It involves sitting on a mat or a chair, straightening the back, and focusing on the movement of breath, often to a count.
  6. Transcendental: Transcendental meditation is an Indian technique, first introduced in the 1950s. It is practiced widely worldwide and involves repeating specific mantras, which are often the Tantric names of Hindu deities.
  7. Guided: Guided meditation is “a modern phenomenon” that involves focusing with the help of a guide on overcoming a specific challenge or achieving a specific desire. Guided meditations are often shared via recordings that consumers can listen to with headphones while they are either seated in a comfortable position or laying down. They often involve imagery that “makes use of the imagination and visualization powers of the brain” for the purposes of relaxation and/or healing.
  8. Binaural Beats: Binaural beats are sound frequencies that were originally discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, a Polish physicist, and meteorologist.  Through his research. Dove learned that when these rhythms are transmitted through stereo headphones -with a different beat playing in each ear – they can help the brain achieve a meditative state. Binaural beats are useful for relaxation, sleep, and focus.
  9. Affirmations: Affirmations are usually incorporated within the practice of guided imagery and involve the repetition of a positive or inspirational phrase tied to a specific desire or goal. “I believe in myself,” “I have confidence in what I do,” and “life is good,” are examples of common affirmations.

Daily Meditation Can Reduce Traumatic Stress, Including PTSD

What do you see when you close your eyes? Do you picture yourself sitting near a babbling brook, perhaps fishing or reading a novel? Can you picture yourself soaking up sun on a sandy beach or counting the stars in a dark, clear sky? Maybe you’re starting to breathe a little more deeply and slowly as you envision this serene, picturesque setting. Maybe your muscles are beginning to relax, and any tension you’ve experienced throughout the day is starting to dissipate.

Last time we asked you to picture serenity, we shared six ways meditation will improve your life. These include:

  • Stress Relief
  • Making Money
  • Improved Immune System
  • Improved Sleep
  • Problem Solving

Today, we’re going to dig deeper. What happens when the images behind your closed eyelids look like a nightmare instead of a daydream? What if the “tension” you’ve experienced throughout the day is a war zone or a natural disaster or a violent personal attack? What if the trauma you’ve had to endure has left you with emotional scars? Thankfully, there is help available. Did you know that daily meditation can reduce traumatic stress, including PTSD? Today, we’d like to show you how.

What Is PTSD?

Daily Meditation Can Reduce Traumatic Stress

The American Psychiatric Association defines PTSD as “a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal assault.”

Symptoms of this often debilitating condition may include flashbacks, intrusive negative thoughts, distorted beliefs about oneself and others, anger and irritability, sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating. “For people with PTSD the symptoms cause significant distress or problems functioning,” the American Psychiatric Association’s website says. “PTSD often occurs with other related conditions, such as depression, substance use, memory problems and other physical and mental health problems.”

“It’s a feeling of being out of control,” explains TSgt. Alan Warren,  a US Air Force Veteran and MP USA student who served an active duty tour in Iraq. “You come back from your service and you’re supposed to be ‘normal,’ but you’ve been trained to respond to so many dangerous things that there’s never a relaxing moment. You’ve become conditioned to evaluate every situation as a bad situation…even when you’re safe.”

How Can Meditation Help?

Meditation exercises reduce stress at MP USA

As a student at MP USA, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in amazing wellness programs such as the ancient Indonesian martial art of Merpati Putih, our Wealth of Health program and our Vibravision classes. Wealth of Health is a form of active meditation that helps us quiet our racing minds through movement. “It gives you a sense of clarity,” explains TSgt. Warren. “No matter where you’ve been in the past, it snaps you into the present, and you feel energized after just one session.”

These benefits of MP USA’s programming can help alleviate military combat stress for service men and women after they complete their tours of duty. Wealth of Health can also be beneficial for reintegration after a traumatic event. “When I came back, I felt really restless,” said Warren. “As I kept analyzing every situation, I developed restless leg syndrome, and I couldn’t sleep at night because all the bad stuff happens at night. Three years of practicing MP helped me feel recharged and kept me in the now. It gave me a sense of peace and being in the moment. For me, meditation is kind of like getting a massage for the mind.”

There are many ways to enjoy the type of mental massage TSgt. Warren describes. In our Vibravision blog, we’ve discussed five meditation types and their benefits in detail, and our observations about the advantages of meditation are backed by research from the  Mayo Clinic and Oxford Academic.

How Can I Get Started?

Daily Meditation Improves Health and Wellness

If you’d like to learn more about how daily meditation can reduce traumatic stress, including PTSD, the good news is you can get started right away.

“Experiment, and you’ll likely find out what types of meditation work best for you and what you enjoy doing,” the Mayo Clinic suggests. “Adapt meditation to your needs at the moment. Remember, there’s no right way or wrong way to meditate. What matters is that meditation helps you reduce your stress and feel better overall.”

Also, if you’re a trauma survivor who experiences flashbacks, Oxford Academic’s 2017 study determined that practicing transcendental meditation (TM) can “reduce PTSD symptoms without re-experiencing trauma.” Additionally, participants in the Oxford study we referenced above experienced such significant psychological and physiological health benefits that a recommendation was made that they “continue regular TM practice indefinitely.”

If you’d like to experience these benefits personally through MP USA’s Wealth of Health and Vibravision classes, don’t wait. We invite you to call (385) 955-0650 today!

Why Here?

Five Reasons to Develop Your Expanded Awareness with Vibravision in Ogden Utah

MP USA is the only place in North America where Vibravision is taught, and courses are available both for the seeing and for the blind. Our founders, Nate and Mike Zeleznick, began their study of the martial art form that serves as our foundation, Merpati Putih, in 1999. They were officially recognized as the first American MP members in 2000. In the coming years, both traveled to Indonesia many times and continue to climb the ranks of MP. In the process, they learned more about Vibravision. After years of intense study, Mike offered the first Vibravision class on this side of the globe in November 2014. From there, the program has soared to new heights as we continue to gather endorsements, build partnerships and expand.

Why Now?

Vibravision Benefits for Blind and Sighted Participants

If you can’t make it to the November immersion course don’t worry, both Level 1 and Level 2 immersion training courses are available in February.
